Magnetic Separator

General :
Electro Magnetic Separators/Suspension Magnets are designed specifically for the extraction of continuous/occasional tramp iron from material being carried by conveyor belts, vibratory feeders or gravity chutes.
The Electro magnets employ a high permeability magnetic path using tripolar design. They are D. C. operated rectangular magnets.

Application :
Magnetic Separators are used -
  • to remove tramp iron materials for protection of expensive equipment in the downstream process ;
  • for purification of conveyed material ;
  • for reclaiming and salvaging valuable ferrous scraps ;
Common applications are removal of tramp iron from foundry sand, sized coal, stone, glass cullet, fertilizers, crumb rubber, slag, gypsum, ores and similar material. Applications also include the removal of tramp iron to protect crushers, shredders and similar expensive & vital processing equipment.

Operation :
The energising coils of the Magnetic Separators produce deep and strong magnetic field, which penetrates through the material burden below the magnet. The tramp iron parts get magnetised and are attracted upwards, towards the magnet face. In case of Suspension Magnet, the magnet is suspended over the material being conveyed and ferrous material is attracted and held against the magnet face until the magnet is de-energised. The magnet is normally suspended from a travelling trolley so that it can be moved clear of the conveyor before de-energisation and discharge take place. In case of Overband Magnetic Separator, the attracted iron parts are carried along with the cleated belt of the Magnetic Separator and are continuously discharged away from the processing material.

Installation :
Magnetic Separators can be installed in Cross Belt or Inline arrangement. Refer sketches for different types of installation. In case of Transverse or Cross Belt arrangement the extracted iron particles are discharged into a collection bin/chute at the side of the conveyor. This arrangement is normally not recommended for main conveyor belt speed exceeding 2 M/Sec.
In case of Inline arrangement the Magnetic Separators are installed parallel to the conveyor and the tramp iron parts are discharged beyond the trajectory of the conveyed material. This arrangement is normally recommended for belt speed upto 2.5 M/Sec. When the speed exceeds 2.5 M/Sec. the Inline Magnetic Separator should be installed inclined to the conveyor head pulley. All the components located within the zone of active magnetic field, should be of non-magnetic material.

Specification :
The Magnet Unit of the magnetic separator employs high permeability magnetic path. It is a tripolar design with a Centre Core, Poles, Back Bar in high permeability mild steel. The base is fitted with a robust stainless steel bumping plate designed to withstand heavy impact of the extracted tramp iron. The energising coil is aluminium, insulated with double fibre glass class 'H' insulation and a coat of specially formulated resin to make the coil impervious to moisture and connected into a terminal box to receive D. C. supply. Suitable lugs for installation and handling of Magnet Unit are also provided. The Overband Magnetic Separator consists of Suspension Magnet Unit, the supporting structure, head and tail pulley, cleated belt for tramp iron discharge and drive unit for running the cleated belt.

Selection :
EZ Magnetic Separators/Suspension Magnets are custom designed for individual process needs. For most suitable selection, please furnish :
  1. Conveyor details, such as belt width in mm, belt speed in Mtr/Sec., angle of troughing, inclination of conveyor, capacity of conveyor, material of conveyor belt, type of feed (continuous or batch).
  2. Details of conveyed material such as description, flow characteristics, maximum size, density, burden depth.
  3. Details of iron parts to be separated such as description, size (min. and max.), weight (min. and max.) and shape of different iron particles.
  4. Operating condition viz. duty of operation, atmospheric condition.
  5. Available electrical supply.
